Protect Yourself Get Screened for COLON CANCER
When: Tuesday, March 9, 2010
Time: Noon - 1:30 p.m.
Location: North Star Lodge Community Room
Featured Speaker: Anita Mitchell, Founder of Washington Colon Cancer STARS, and Colon Cancer Survivor

At age 41, Anita was diagnosed with colon cancer, years before the age of recommended colon cancer screenings. A passionate advocate for education on screening and awareness, Anita received the Laurel of Advocacy Award from Prevent Cancer Foundation in 2008, and testified for bill 1337 for Washington State to mandate that insurance companies cover the cost of screening.

Why we need to raise awareness of Colorectal Cancer:

  • Colorectal cancer is the #2 cause of cancer death in the U.S.
  • Over 150,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year.
  • Colorectal cancer often has no symptom at all until it's at an advanced stage.
  • Colorectal cancer is 80% preventable when detected early.

Dress In Blue Day: Started in Seattle in 2007, Anita dedicated Dress in Blue Day to her friend, Carmen, who passed away from colon cancer, & to all others who had lost their fight against colon cancer. Dress in Blue Day, the First Friday in March, is now nationally recognized as "the" day to raise awareness nationally about this dangerous disease.

No cost is associated with this workshop; however, RSVP's are requested.

A complimentary light lunch will be provided.

Cutting Edge Clinical Trials

"As an early-stage clinical trial research facility, North Star Lodge is conducting clinical trials on par with some of the largest and best-funded research centers in the United States," according to Dr. Thomas Boyd MD, board-certified in adult Hematology and Medical Oncology, and the Medical Director of U.S. Oncology clinical trials at Memorial's North Star Lodge. "Our lack of bureaucracy here often means we are able to offer clinical trial treatments to patients in Central Washington sooner than even the better known university facilities," he adds. "The trials that are done at North Star are very carefully managed. Patients do not need to go to a large center to receive cutting edge treatment. The best treatment available today is provided right here by our physicians."

Starting in 2009, North Star Lodge and The Memorial Foundation will begin a concentrated effort to obtain donations specifically designated for research. The establishment of a North Star Lodge Research Fund will ensure continued growth and excellence for this important component of cancer treatment.

North Star Lodge Cancer Center An example of practice excellence among medium practices

The facility name conjures a mental picture of a beautiful, tranquil lodge in an idyllic lush mountain setting. The 42,000 square foot facility does not disappoint. It is a bi-level structure on approximately five acres. You cross a rough plank bridge, over a bubbling stream to enter the foyer. A large portico shelters the front entrance protecting patients and visitors from occasional inclement weather. continued...
