Tumor Board

Tumor Board

Memorial Hospital oncologists meet once-a-week for what is called "tumor boards" to seek feedback from their peers about specific patient cases. They gather in the hospital's auditorium and take turns discussing their latest cancer patients. They throw out ideas, thoughts and theories. It is a multi-disciplinary cancer conference - a place for them to ask questions and share data.

Dr. Tony Ha, Cancer Conference Coordinator, finds this collaboration among physicians a priceless service to patients. "While patients do not normally attend, it's better than getting a second or even third opinion. That might not be necessary in every situation, but in cases with complexity, it gives the family and physician a sense of security." He also believes, "With a tough case, we like to hear what our colleagues have to say. They often think of something you hadn't. You see things in a different light. It raises new possibilities."

There are currently four different tumor boards held on a weekly basis:

  • General Boards (multiple types of tumors)
  • Breast Boards
  • Lung/Thoracic Boards
  • GU (genital/urinary) Boards

These unique meetings are just one example of how local doctors are working together to keep Yakima at the forefront of cancer care and making sure local patients receive the best possible care. All physicians are welcome to attend. For information about dates and times of each meeting call (509) 574-3400.
